What it actually feels like to be here

We need to tell you something about this place. When we first drove up, in Sebastián's car, through the winding roads to Casa Sumapaz, kids and adults were making monkey noises (don't ask me why) every time they'd see the 'colibri signs'. We were all truly excited! However, even after all those months of planning, and the immediate connection to Clara and Sebastián, who host the house, we had no idea how this experience was actually going to turn out.

Then the fog cleared when we entered the gates of Casa Sumapaz. Within hours, our daughter was collecting guavas to feed the wild horses she'd just met. Within days, our toddler had three new "aunties" among the other parents, and sat down to dinner together with new friends and families from five different countries. Nobody was performing "community." It was just happening.

That's what Casa Sumapaz does. Maybe it's the altitude and mountains that slows us down. The shared meals pull us together. The mornings start with birdsong and kids' laughter outside your window. And somewhere around week two, you stop keeping track of the days because the rhythm just... works.

We're not going to pretend every moment is perfect. Some mornings are hard. Some kids clash. Some parents need more quiet than others. But that's exactly what makes this real. We've designed the structure to hold all of it: the beauty and the mess.

If you've been thinking about doing something like this but aren't sure it's the right time, or the right place, or if your family is "the type": we didn't think we were either. Come anyway.

A small but honest note: in February our family of four will be holding our Alentejo cohort in Portugal at the same time. Casa Sumapaz 2027 is carried by the hosts, two facilitating families and the educators on the ground (more on that in the Team section), with us one WhatsApp away and fully in the design of every rhythm. July 2026 proved it. The model doesn't rely on us. The village holds itself.

A holistic retreat center in the Colombian mountains

Casa Sumapaz is a holistic retreat center nestled in the tranquil mountains of Arbelaez, Colombia, just southwest of Bogotá. With an emphasis on well-being, environmental care, and mindful living, this center is designed to help guests reconnect with themselves, each other, and nature. Daily temperatures of 18-22°C keep things comfortable as you enjoy the lush forests, fresh air, and a strong sense of community care. Run by our sister Clara and brother Sebastian, a Colombian family with teenagers of their own. They've woven family life into the space and thought about all ages in their creations.

The Surroundings

3.5 hours from Bogota by car. The region is known for its biodiversity, coffee farms, and hiking trails. Sumapaz Paramo is the largest paramo in the world. Weekend excursions include coffee, cocoa, or goat farm visits, local markets, and river outings.

Meals Made to Nourish and Connect

Three meals a day, Monday to Saturday, cooked by the Casa Sumapaz kitchen from fresh, organic and local ingredients, and eaten together. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and allergies are accommodated as standard. Sundays are the community's day: the kitchen rests, the hosts provide the ingredients from their weekly shop, and families cook together. The Sunday cost per person is published before you pay a deposit and comes out of your activities account, so nobody is collecting money from anybody.

On-Site Kids Program

Led by Lorena and Mateo. Lorena is an educator with 15 years in alternative and community-based education, a degree in Humanities & Spanish Language, and a specialization in Children's Literature. Children learn through arts, literature, nature, and project-based exploration, building real skills alongside their new best friends. The programme runs weekdays for ages 1 to 12, with dedicated toddler support for children under three when there are enough of them in the cohort. Outside programme hours, children are with their parents.

Weekdays, 9:00 to 15:00. In July 2026 the programme ran mornings only and finished at 12:30, and families told us plainly that the afternoon gap was the hardest part of the week. For 2027 it runs through to 3pm, lunch included.

Activities for All Ages

Walk trails through the coffee plantation or native forest, put your hands in the garden, swim in the natural pool, reconnect to your inner child in the hobbit house with swings, slack-line, and games. There are quiet spots to work from around the property. The connection is honest rather than fast, so read the internet question in the FAQ before you plan a week of video calls around it.

Explore the region through optional weekend experiences: yoga, temazcal (traditional steam ritual), visits to local cocoa farms, river excursions and more. These let you sink into the rhythms of Colombia and bond as a family.

What a Wednesday looks like

There's a rhythm, not a rigid schedule. Some days flow differently. This is the shape of a typical midweek day. The kids programme runs weekdays, 9:00 to 15:00.

Both are open now. Both are 29 nights, so the price is the same either way. What differs is the season and who is on the ground.

29 nights. Up to 9 families. Age bands are set by each child's age on 2 February 2027.

Outside the northern school holidays, so this one suits families who school at home or can travel in term time. Lauren and Tiago are holding our Alentejo cohort these same weeks, so Casa Sumapaz is held by the hosts, the facilitating families and the educators.

July cohort

29 nights. Up to 9 families. Age bands are set by each child's age on 30 June 2027.

The northern summer holidays, so this one works for families in school. It fills first, and it is the month most families ask for.

What a month here holds

Both 2027 cohorts are open: February 2 to March 3, and June 30 to July 29. One month each. Casa Sumapaz prices per person rather than per unit, so a solo parent pays for one adult, not two. Our Programme Fee works the same way: $1,050 for one adult, $2,100 for two. A solo parent with one small child starts at $4,750. Two parents with two children, one in each age band, at $9,875.

Everything in your month

The other families. When we ask families afterwards what mattered most, this is what they name first.

Three meals a day, Monday to Saturday. Cooked by the magicians in the Casa Sumapaz kitchen and eaten together at one long table. Sundays the kitchen rests and we cook together.

Your family's private accommodation. Ensuite bathroom, daily tidying, eco-friendly linen changed. Our July families rated the rooms 4.7 out of 5 and the upkeep a straight 5.

The escuelita, weekdays 9:00 to 15:00. Lorena and Mateo, two to three age bands, lunch included, and toddler support when the under-3 count justifies it.

The land. Coffee plantation, native forest, natural pool, gardens, the hobbit house, and quiet places to work with a view of the Andes.

The rhythm we hold. Opening circle, parent circles, the Sunday model, and every shared cost visible to you in one sheet.

What the Cohli Programme Fee covers

The people, chosen rather than queued. Every family is hand-picked and matched on your children's ages, your rhythms and how you like to live. Not first come, first served.

A house we already know. We ran a cohort here in July 2026. We know what worked, what did not, and what that group told us afterwards, and we take it back to the host between cohorts. They told us the afternoons were the hardest part of the week, so the escuelita now runs to 15:00 instead of stopping at 12:30. You are not booking from photographs.

Everything sorted before you land. Welcome calls, the group chat, meal sign-ups, the school question, who is bringing what. You arrive already knowing names.

Someone holding the month. Facilitating families, educators, the host relationship, the logistics. Someone else is holding it, so the month is yours.

You do not leave when you leave. You stay in the community, the threads keep going, and the next cohort is built partly from what yours taught us.

The fee is the same on every 2027 cohort, whether the house is simple or grand, because the work behind it does not change.

Rooms and meals. This is Casa Sumapaz's own 2027 rate, meals included. We pass it on exactly as they set it, plus the card fee. What you pay the house is what the house receives.

Two age lines, different on purpose. The house counts anyone 13 and over as an adult for a room and meals. Our fee counts adults at 18 and over, never more than two. So a 15-year-old has a place at the table and no fee. Ages are set on the cohort start date, so a birthday mid-month moves nobody.

The stay deposit is a $500 security deposit and a $500 activities account. The activities account is your money: shared outings and the Sunday ingredients come out of it, you see every item in one sheet from day one, and nobody collects cash from anybody during the month. Whatever you don't use comes back with your security deposit, itemized, within 30 days of checkout.

Before you pay a deposit we send you the current laundry rate, the price range for the weekend excursions, and cash and ATM guidance, so none of the on-the-ground costs are a surprise.

Before you decide
How your place gets confirmed

You sign, you pay your booking deposit, and your place is held. A cohort runs once enough families have joined it. We confirm on or before 20 November 2026, and we write to you either way. You will never be left guessing. Once it's confirmed, book your flights.

If it doesn't reach that minimum it doesn't run, and everything you've paid, booking deposit included, comes back to you in full.

And if your own plans change after you've paid, we look for a replacement family. If we find one, your payments come back less a $500 administrative fee.

Biologist by training. Theater, dance, circus, Kundalini Yoga, and holistic nutrition by path. In 2011 he and Clara opened Pan Vivo, a conscious kitchen, and Sangat, a Kundalini school in Bogotá. Today he directs Casa Sumapaz , the refuge they built to grow peace inward, in community, and in how we care for the land.

One of twelve siblings in the Muñoz Calle family, Francisco is a visionary and a worker since he was a boy , and, as our last cohort's kids will tell you, the grandpa who pulled out ice cream on the coffee-farm visit. He's not a host. He's family, and he's very much part of the welcome.

Practical tips from families who've done this cohort before.

Layers. At 2,600m it's 18-22°C during the day but cooler at night. Bring a warm sweater.

Rain boots for kids. The property has trails, gardens, and occasional mud. They'll live in these.

Universal adapter. Colombia uses Type A/B outlets (same as US). European families will need adapters.

A camera you'll actually use. Phone is fine. The sunsets and kid moments are worth capturing.

A few books to share. The communal library grows every cohort. Leave one, take one.

Basic first aid + altitude tea. Coca tea is offered locally and many people find it helps them settle. We also have a first aid station.

Vaccinations. Requirements change and depend on your nationality and your route. We send current guidance at onboarding, and your doctor has the final word.
Questions About This Cohort
What families ask about Casa Sumapaz
The house sits high, comparable to Quito or Denver. Most families adjust in a day or two. Arrive in Bogota a day or two early if you can, since Bogota sits higher still. No child in our 2025 or 2026 cohorts had trouble with it.
Honestly, this is the weakest part of the house. We used to publish a speed here that we had never measured ourselves, so we have taken it down. Families in the 2026 cohort found calls from the common areas unreliable and one brought her own Starlink. We have asked the host for a measured figure and we will publish it here, good or bad, as soon as we have it. Until then, plan on a mobile data backup for any call you cannot miss.
The four-week format is on purpose. It takes about a week to settle in, and the deepest connections form in weeks two and three. We've found that shorter stays don't give families enough time to truly experience community. A family arriving halfway through changes the month for everyone already in it, so we hold the line on this one.
By each child's age on the day the cohort starts: 2 February 2027 for the February cohort, 30 June 2027 for July. That is fixed when the cohort begins, so a birthday during the month does not move your child into a more expensive band. Children under 1 on the start date are free and take no place in the kids programme.
We accommodate all dietary needs. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and allergies are normal here, not special requests. You'll share dietary info during the onboarding process and the cooking crews plan accordingly.
Weekends are lighter: no formal learning circles. Most Saturdays there's an optional group excursion (Sumapaz Paramo, hot springs, local markets), priced in advance and paid from your activities account. Sundays are the community's day. The kitchen rests, the hosts bring the ingredients from their weekly shop, and we cook together. Some families still slip away to Bogota, and that's fine too.
