Why we're excited about coliving at the Eco-Farm

Portugal is one of our home bases. Tiago grew up here, his favorite surf beaches are a short drive away, and this region is one of the places we keep coming back to. For us, it's very special to share somewhere we already love.

We stayed at the Alentejo Eco-Farm for five nights last spring for Tiago's birthday, and on day one we were already saying it out loud: this has to be a Cohli cohort.

The property is big and safe, with a little cluster of houses that felt like our own neighborhood for the week. We could step out our door and talk with our neighbors while the kids played or rode their bikes, which are free and plenty with bike paths to ride. In addition it has a playground, a half-pipe, heated pools, and workshops running throughout the day—horseback riding, gardening, the stuff that makes eyes go wide. Adults had two saunas, a cold plunge, a wood-fired jacuzzi, fireplaces in the evenings, and honestly the best breakfast buffet we've ever eaten (fresh eggs from the chickens out back, and hand-baked sourdough bread every morning). This felt like a perfect place for being in family community for a month or more.

This place is hard to categorize - it's part farm, part hotel. It was built for families. It has won awards and graced the pages of many international magazines. We'll take it directly from their website, explaining their concept: "It's where we're at home, away from home. Where they welcome us and let us be. Where there is always something to do, even if it is doing nothing. Or almost nothing. Where we can harvest what we have planted, close our eyes and feel the breeze pass. Breathe deep into the lull. Where time runs as fast as we want. And we do not have to be without a net to connect to the earth. Where enough we open the windows to let the quiet enter. Where we walk barefoot, feet in the herbs, and lie down in fresh sheets, just stretched. Such a place did not exist, so it had to be invented."

The Place

A sustainable farmhouse in Portugal's heart

The Alentejo Eco-Farm is a working agricultural property in southern Portugal, halfway between the countryside and the sea, a few kilometers from Zambujeira do Mar, and offers the perfect combination of connection to nature and the comforts of modern life. The property features a cluster of thoughtfully designed accommodations—Farmlofts and WeWood houses with private kitchens, modern amenities, and direct access to gardens, pools, and trails. Each home is independent yet connected to shared spaces where the community gathers.

Accommodation

Our group will share a cluster of private houses: Farmlofts (1 bedroom) and WeWood houses (2 bedroom) (65–85m²) with fully equipped kitchens, bathrooms, AC, integrated heating, WiFi, coffee machine, and private terrace. Weekly cleaning with fresh linens included. Your Cohli neighbors right outside your front door.

The Surroundings

Located in South-West Portugal, in the heart of Alentejo's wine and cork country. Minutes from hiking trails through native forest, biking routes across farmland, and local villages. 15 minutes from the ocean. The region is known for its slow rhythm and farm-to-table food culture. Weekdays (9am–3pm) at the on-site Nature Interpretation Centre. Cohli educators lead nature activities, exploration, and learning using the property's forests, gardens, and on-site workshops

We'll gather for activities, cultural learning, some shared meals, and connection circles and you'll have your own family home to retreat to as well. Expect light programming mixed with spontaneous connection moments.

Optional Meal Plans:

Weekday lunch + dinner: €30/adult, €15/child (4-11), €10/child (1-3). Weekly community pizza: €16/adult, €12/child (4-12).

Two distinct blocks. Pick one or stay for both.

We have two different seasons so you can pick the timing that works for your family. Both are limited to 8 families per block. There's a roughly four-week pause between them around the holidays.

Block 1: Autumn Escape

Two full months of immersion. Fresh days (10–16°C), wildflowers blooming, fireplace chats, and nice surf breaks. A deeper immersion for families wanting extended time.

How long do you stay?

One month minimum. You don't have to stay the full block: a family could join Block 2 for just the first 30 days, for example.

That said, we prioritize longer stays. The rhythms, the friendships, the trust between families - all of that deepens with time. If you can stay the full block (or both blocks back-to-back), that's where the experience really opens up.

Both blocks include: All accommodations and amenities, daily breakfast, kids program (Mon–Fri), activity access, community programming, and Cohli facilitation.

For solo parents traveling with one child

A 40m² studio with full kitchen, private terrace, and everything one parent and one child need. We added this option because solo parents are often left out of family coliving.

Premium Farmhouse

For larger families of 5 or more

Nearest Airports

Lisbon (LIS) or Faro (FAO). Both have direct flights from across Europe and beyond. Faro is closer.

Transfer

Around 1h 30 min from Faro, 2h 20 min from Lisbon. We can help coordinate shared transport or you can rent a car (recommended for exploring the region).

Visa

Portugal is in the Schengen Area. EU citizens need no visa. US, UK, Canadian, and many other nationalities get 90-day visa-free access. We'll share specific guidance after acceptance.

Questions

What families ask about Alentejo

The Cohli kids program runs weekdays 9am–3pm. Most families use it as full childcare so they can work. But it's flexible: you can pick your kids up early for a hike, do a half day, or take a day off together. You can even join your kids during the programming when you wish. We'll work around your needs.

The property has strong WiFi throughout. Coworking spaces in the main building and lots of nooks for privacy. Homes also have coverage. It's suitable for full-time remote work.

Yes - that's the whole idea. Every house has a fully equipped kitchen. Weekends are self-catered. Weekdays, you can buy into the farmtable meals (breakfast included, lunch/dinner à la carte) or cook independently. It's your choice.

We've had babies to teenagers in our cohorts. Our Cohli kids program is designed for ages 3 - 17, with younger ages being accepted as long as we have the availability of an extra assistant. Activities are scaled by age group. Parents can join their younger children if you wish!

Block 1 (Nov–Dec): 16–18°C, mostly sunny, occasional rain. Warm sweaters and layers recommended in the early mornings and evenings. Block 2 (Jan–Mar): 10–16°C with spring warming. Wildflowers and longer daylight. Rain is more frequent but brief. When the sun is out, sweaters come off! Both blocks are beautiful.

This is our first cohort at this property, so there are no testimonials yet. However, we stayed there ourselves and can vouch that this place is incredible for families living long-term. This is our second year running family coliving programs!
